HV HIPOT has successfully delivered a cable diagnostic project for a 34.5kV urban distribution network in Mexico, using the VLF-68TPD ultra-low frequency full-feature diagnostic system. The solution accurately located 7 hidden internal insulation defects in lines with over 15 years of service, reduced maintenance cost by 62%, and cut power outage duration by 70%.

The aging urban grid had suffered frequent unexplained tripping incidents. Cables laid under urban roads meant large-scale excavation would incur high costs and long power outages. The local power company required accurate defect localization and type identification without blind excavation, and all work had to be completed within planned outage windows, with results compliant with IEEE 400.2 standards.
HV HIPOT deployed the VLF-68TPD integrated diagnostic system, which combines withstand voltage, tan delta and partial discharge testing in a single unit. The three-in-one design allows all tests to be completed in a single pressurization, minimizing outage time. Its partial discharge positioning accuracy reaches ≤15m, and the built-in expert diagnosis system supports defect type identification (air gap, water tree, interface defect) and automatically generates risk assessment reports.
The project followed a three-step diagnostic workflow:
  1. Withstand Screening: 0.1Hz VLF 2.0U₀ withstand test to quickly rule out lines with immediate breakdown risk
  2. Tan Delta Assessment: Full-section tanδ testing to lock in 3 cable sections with abnormal values
  3. PD Localization: Partial discharge detection on abnormal sections to precisely locate 7 joint internal air gap defects
